Niello is an unusual alloy that can be fused into engraved areas of jewelry to form powerfully graphic designs with high contrast areas of lustrous dark gray. Used primarily with silver, it was popular in the early 20th century for both men and women’s jewelry. Here, we have a truly splendid chain. Alternating styles of silver and niello links are connected with smaller links of rose gold, and it has not one, but two delightful, oversized, striped spring rings, which can be worn in the back, or in front holding a locket or other bauble. Silver, niello, and 9k rose gold, ca 1910. Measures 17” long .
