Throughout history, snakes have been seen as mystical creatures - protectors of sacred spaces, symbols of rebirth, fertility, and wisdom. Victorians were enthralled with Mysticism, and that passion is clearly expressed in this powerful piece. A velvet smooth and sinuous serpent coils at the throat. He gazes knowingly at the world while suspending a rich red garnet drop from his lips. The triple looped creature started life as a pin, but has been suspended from a substantial chain of buttery 18k yellow gold. The resulting necklace is weighty, sleek, and magically sensual. Snake, ca.1880, is bloomed 14k gold and measures 1.5” across. Total necklace length is 17.5”with later chain. Please note garnet is fractured, but secure in the mounting.
